Personal branding is a term that we have heard more and more in recent years. But do you actually know what this is and what you can do with it? A brand is a brand and/or logo that distinguishes a company from other brands. Branding goes further in this, it is a feeling that people have about a brand. What comes to your mind when you see the brand or hear an advertisement about it? For example, consider Coca-Cola. You know exactly what it is, whether you drink it or not. Coca-Cola is associated with laughter and happiness. This is due to the way they portray themselves to the consumer. And, yes it can be weird to see yourself in the same context, after all you are a person and not a product, but with personal branding you can position yourself as a brand. And that can be very useful if you are looking for a job, for example.
What exactly is personal branding?
Personal branding is about you. With personal branding you present yourself as a brand to others, and you ensure that you evoke positive images and associations. You use your personality, knowledge and experience to distinguish yourself from others. You show who you are and what you stand for. You need to start seeing yourself as a brand you want to sell. What do you want people to associate you with when they think of your name? Are you an expert in a certain area or are there qualities that you would like to have associated with your brand? Once you know how you want to be seen as a brand, you can start working on your personal brand.
How do you build your personal brand?
1. Understand who you are and what you want and be clear about the image you intend to show.
2. Make sure your brand message is consistent throughout. For example, your resume and LinkedIn profile should contain the same information.
3. Create a resume that stands out. A website, business cards and a Twitter account are also a must.
4. Radiate ambition. Create an image that people can identify with.
5. Keep it short. Can you describe in a few words what your values are? This way you have less chance of being forgotten.
6. Take matters into your own hands. Don't wait, but sell yourself, for example, to a good secondment agency such as Brunel.
7. Show your best side during the job interview.
8. Know the value of networking and know how to use it.
9. Promote your brand everywhere. On the internet, at networking events, at parties – everywhere.
10. Keep developing yourself, and regularly take a close look at your brand.
