Leadership is the great challenge of today, in all areas, and leadership will continue to be one of our greatest challenges in the future.
I want to start by acknowledging one of toughest roles in leadership:parenthood. Yes, one of the biggest leadership challenges is parenting. Unless we take our children by the hand and strengthen the family foundations, the nation is fragile. Parenthood is where it all begins.
My dad had a simple little rule. He said, "Son, if you get in trouble at school, when you come home, it's double." Does this method sound familiar? Double the trouble at home if you get in trouble at school.
Many parents hope that someone else will take on the leadership role – teachers or the church or the school or the community. That someone will take it upon themselves to be the example. But it is a challenge for parents to empower themselves, to become leaders.
The Challenge of Leadership
Leadership is the challenge of being something more than mediocre. It was said of Abraham Lincoln that when his mother died he was by her bedside, and his last words to her were, "Be somebody, Abe." If this story is true, he must have taken it to heart. Be someone. Be a wise person. Be a strong person. Be a nice person. All attributes of leadership are a unique challenge.
Leadership is the challenge of moving to a new level, a new dimension that has opportunities and responsibilities. Who wouldn't want responsibility with opportunity if they're building an extraordinary life? You wouldn't want it any other way.
There is a whole new method of leadership called leadership by invitation. Not leadership by threat. No leadership by aggravation. Not leadership by intimidation, which shows their weakness or their ego at work instead of their skills. Invitational Leadership. Invite someone to a better way of doing things.
This is also called inspirational leadership. Inspire someone to make the necessary changes to progress or to get the job done. As leaders, we inspire. As leaders, we seduce. As leaders, we invite. Invite, seduce, inspire, but don't threaten.
7 qualities of an effective leader
If you want to be a leader who attracts quality people, the key is to become a person of quality yourself. quality. Leadership is the ability to attract someone for the gifts, skills, and opportunities you provide as an owner, as a manager, as a parent.
What is important in leadership is that is to hone your skills. All great leaders keep working on themselves until they become effective. Here's how:
1. Be Strong But Not Rude.
Learning to be strong but not rude is an extra step you need to take to become a powerful and capable leader with a wide range of reach. But it's a thin line. Make sure you don't cross it. Some people confuse rudeness with strength. It's not even a good substitute. Rudeness, we don't need it. Strength, we need it.
2. Be kind but not weak.
We must not confuse weakness with kindness. Kindness is not weak. Kindness is a certain kind of strength. We have to be kind enough to tell someone the truth. We need to be kind enough and considerate enough to bring it into play. We need to be kind enough to tell it like it is and not kid ourselves.
3. Be bold but don't be a bully.
It takes boldness to win the day. We must seize the moment boldly, seize the opportunity boldly, seize the opportunity boldly. But we don't need bullies. We don't need anyone to push anyone.
4. Be humble but not shy.
Some people confuse shyness with humility. But humility is a virtue, and timidity is a weakness. You need to turn your shyness into strength. Keep working on it until eventually it no longer dominates your life, and then increase your ability to understand the vastness of this life. Humility is a sense of awe, a sense of wonder, an awareness of the human soul and spirit. Humility is an understanding of the distance between us and the stars, while feeling that we are part of the stars.
5. Be thoughtful but not lazy.
We need to think, but we also need to act. You have to dream without just being a dreamer. Head in the clouds, yes, dreaming big dreams, but down to earth.
6. Be proud but not arrogant.
It takes pride to build your ambitions. It takes pride to build a community. There's something to be said for pride, yes, but don't cross the line into arrogance. Pride, we need it. Arrogance, we don't. Do you know the worst kind of arrogance? The arrogance of ignorance. If someone is smart and arrogant, we can tolerate that. But if someone is ignorant and arrogant, it's hard to take.
7. Have humor without madness.
There is a difference between being silly and having humor. In leadership, we learn that it's OK to be witty but not dumb; fun but not stupid.
The Basic Laws of Leadership
All leaders should learn the Basic Laws of Leadership so they can use them for illustration, as well as for productivity.
The Law of sowing and reaping
Whatever you sow, you reap. Another way to put it:to reap, you have to sow. Everyone has to get good at one of two things:planting in the spring or begging in the fall. To deserve the harvest, you must plant the seed, care for it in the summer and then reap it carefully.
Now here is the rest of the law of sowing and reaping:if you sow well, you reap well. If you sow badly, you reap badly. You cannot sow evil and hope for good. You can't plant weeds and expect flowers. It works both ways, positive and negative.
Here's something else about the law of sowing and reaping:you don't just reap what you sow. You reap far more than you sow. It is important to understand. It works both positively and negatively. The old prophet said, "If you sow wind, you don't reap wind, you reap a whirlwind." But if you plant a cup of corn, how much do you get back – a cup? No, a bushel for the cup. You get more back than you plant. This is the reason for planting – for increasing.
Now here is the next key to the law of sowing and reaping:Sometimes it just doesn't work at all. The farmer plants the crop in the spring and takes care of it all summer. He is an honorable man, loves his family and is a decent citizen. But the day before the combines are sent to the field, a hailstorm arrives and beats his crop into the ground. Here we go. It's lost.
So this time it didn't work. Now what should the farmer do? He must decide whether to start again or not. "Are we going to take another chance next spring?" We advise him to do this even if he lost everything in the last harvest, because more often than not you will have a harvest if you plant in the spring. There are no guarantees, but it's a very good rating.
The Law of Averages
If you do something often enough, you will get a ratio of results. Once you understand that, the world is yours.
Let's say you're new to sales and you talk to 10 people, and you get one. We now have what we call the beginning of a ratio. Talk to 10, nine say no and one says, “Yes, I will buy your product. I will take your service. Someone says, "Well, one out of 10 isn't that good." Well, you're just getting started. Here's what happens with the law of averages:once it starts, it tends to keep going. If you talk to 10 and get one, chances are excellent that if you talk to 10 more, you'll get another. You don't have to be perfect here. All you have to do is understand the law of averages.
Even if you only get one out of 10, you can now start participating. If you've been at it a long time, you can get nine out of 10. Even though I'm just starting, I tell you if we have a contest, I'm going to beat you. You say, “Well, you just started. How could you beat me? " It's very simple. If we have a 30 or 60 day contest, while you talk to 10 and you have nine, I will talk to 100 and I have 10. I win. Isn't that smart?
Here's what I do if I'm new:I make up in numbers what I lack in skill. As my skills increase, I don't have to do 100 to get 10. Once you understand the law of averages, odds are excellent that ratios will work for you. The Law of Averages will serve you well as a leader in your business career, in your business career, in any type of career.
The 80/20 Rule
There is an old leadership rule that has been around for a long time. long time. He says 20% of people do 80% of the business and 80% do 20%. It's not something you're trying to change or rearrange. It's part of the deal. Someone says, "Well, I'll shoot 80%. No, because then, of those who will remain, some will make 80% and the others 20%. It's not something you mess with.
You work with these laws. So how do you work with the 80/20 rule? Here's what you need to do:part of time management. You can only spend 20% of your time on the 80% because they only produce 20%. Now you can spend 80% of your time on the 20%. The pull, however, is in the opposite direction. Guess who wants eighty percent of your time? The wrong group.
It's not a moral issue. This is the wrong group in terms of productivity and efficiency in your business, for your future. So what's the answer to that? You can work individually with the 20%, but you can only work in a group with the 80%. The key to remember:Give 80% of your time to the 20%.
The Law of Faith
Faith is the ability to see things that do not yet exist. Faith can turn difficulty into positive reality. The Law of Faith has many parts:
See it as it is. First, faith is the ability to see it as it is. Faith is not embarrassed to see it as it is because faith is a miracle worker. Faith does not ignore the negative. Faith uses the negative, because if there were no negative, then there would be no need for faith. You need faith because all is not well. If it's ugly, then it's ugly. If it doesn't work, then it doesn't work. If it's a mess, then it's a mess. It doesn't hurt to call a mess a mess. Faith is not afraid to admit it. It don't bother faith to see it. Seeing it as it is - that's the beginning of faith.
See it better than it is. Second, faith is the ability to see her better than she is. Can't see past the mess? The mess is for today. Can't watch tomorrow? The answer is, "Yes, I can watch tomorrow." “Humans have this incredible ability to look at tomorrow, look at next week, next year. So we not only have the ability to see it as it is – the beginning of faith – but also to see it better than it is. Dream the dreams, make the plans, visualize, use your imagination and see it better than it is.
Improve it. Now the part that turns faith into reality:improve it. Faith must now be invested. If you invest faith in action, you can take any situation and make it better than it is.
Don't see it as worse than it is. Here's something to watch out for in the early days of faith:don't see it worse than it is. Don't blow it out of proportion. If it's bad, that's how bad it is. You do not need to multiply the severity of the situation by 10. It is not necessary. See it as it is. That's the deal.
Don't see it more than it can become. Here is another unique key to faith:see it no more than it can become. There is a thin line between faith and madness. Yes, it is possible to see yourself as a millionaire, but not overnight. It's still possible to be a millionaire and it's still possible to be rich and rich, given some time working with the law of averages. A lot is possible without being stupid in your exercise of faith.
It could be worse than when you first see it. Keep in mind that it could be worse than what you first saw. Sometimes you just look at the surface. You better look below. You better take a closer look so you can see it as bad as it is. Not to overload it now, but to make sure you see it as bad as it really is.
It could be a lot more in the future. Remember to give yourself a chance to see that it could be so much more in the future than what you can see first. On a foggy night, if all you can see is a hundred feet, then walk the first hundred feet. Now you can see another hundred feet.
So take the first steps of faith. Anything you can see becoming possible, start believing it, have faith in it. As this begins to take shape, you will be able to see it more and more and more, and the possibilities will begin to increase in your own imagination.
Work with the people who deserve it
Life works by merit. So when leading people, learn to work with the people who deserve it, not the people who need it.
You need to set goals in advance to determine who deserves it. When you bring someone into your business, you set the ground rules. Make sure all instructions are clear. Watch for results and accomplishments, then you'll know who deserves it.
Now remember the 80/20 rule – the pull is in the opposite direction. Guess who wants your help:usually the wrong people. It's usually the people who need it, not the people who deserve it. There are many places for your benevolence, but in your business you have to answer to the people who deserve it.
Teach people to deserve it.
Teach people and move them having need to deserve begins to boost their self-esteem. You can't believe how high the start of new self-esteem is. If a person hasn't had it for years and years, and they've been beaten by their own philosophy and they've been beaten by everyone - if you start them in the early stages of learning of merit, then that starts this process of self-esteem. And self-esteem leads to action, action leads to progress, and progress leads to fortune. So work with the people who deserve it. And teach people how to earn your time, how to earn your help.
Let people grow and develop.
Don't expect the pear tree to bear apples. I mean, let people do whatever they can. And let them change their minds. Let them grow and develop. Here's what I found:you can't change people, but they can change themselves. The best you can do is inspire, teach, pray and hope. You cannot go in and change them, but you can do your best to convey the message that can create change if someone accepts it. If someone wants to do something, then take the first steps to start. Be happy with the slightest progress, give rewards and a pat on the back and say, “It will work for you. You have followed these two steps. I tell you, if you can take two steps, you can take 102 .
Know that there is good and evil
All leaders must teach that there is both good and evil. We are all challenged to become the best of the good in us and the least of the bad. It is the beginning of civilization. Character is central to leadership.
Let me tell you a story. The frog and the scorpion appear at the same time on the bank of the river, and the frog is about to jump and swim to the other side. The scorpion sees what is about to happen and engages the frog in conversation. He says, “Mr. Frog, I'm a scorpion and I can't swim. Would you be kind enough to let me jump on my back? You swim to the other side of the river and drop me off on the other side. I would be grateful. The frog looks at the scorpion and says, “No way. Scorpions sting frogs and kill them. I'd come out halfway, you'd poke me and I'd drown. The scorpion said, “Mr. Frog, with your frog brain, you don't think. If I pricked you halfway, you would drown and I would drown. I just want to cross to the other side. Please do me a favor. The frog says, “OK, that makes sense. Jump on. The scorpion jumps onto the frog's back and the frog begins to cross the river. Indeed, in the middle of the river, the scorpion stings the frog. They are both in the water about to go down. The frog can't believe what happened, and he says, "Why did you do that? I'm about to drown and die, but so are you. Why would you do that? And the scorpion said, "Because I'm a scorpion." That's his nature, his character. Note this:you cannot take a chance. You have to know the scorpion.
I learned while building a business that there are people you don't need. You are better off without their productivity because they are scorpions in the lap. The old prophet said, "Beware of foxes spoiling the vines. The vineyard looks good, but you better take a closer look – the foxes are hard at work. And to be a good shepherd, to be a good father, to be a good mother, you have to learn the story of the frog and the scorpion and the foxes that spoil the vines.
6 essential traits of good character
Here are what I think are the basics of good character. Miss one, and you'll find a weak link in your character – a link that could be the undoing of your leadership.
1. Integrity
Integrity is a good keyword that sounds like character, but gives us a different way of looking at ideas of character. The root of wholeness means “whole” or “undivided,” and it’s a great way to help us understand what wholeness is – an undivided life. For example, you don't act one way in one situation and another in a different situation. There is wholeness and wholeness in your life. Living this way will build trust with your followers. Another use of the word integrity that gives us insight is when the word is used with respect to a physical structure. A solid, crack-free wall or building is deemed to have integrity. The same could be said for great leaders.
2. Honesty
It is regularly said that honesty is the best policy, but I would add that honesty is the only policy of great leaders. Think about it. Why do people hide the truth? Usually for a few basic reasons:they are afraid of the ramifications or trying to hide something. Either way, a lack of honesty results in you destroying the trust of those who follow you. Even if you tell them the truth but they know you lied to others, it will destroy the trust you had in them. They find themselves thinking, “If he lies to them, is he going to lie to me?”
I never understood what people hope to achieve by being dishonest. Eventually, people know you're not being honest in your relationships and that's why you come forward. However, your reputation is the foundation of your leadership. When we are honest and live transparently in front of our followers, they are able to see us for who we are and make solid decisions to follow.
3. Loyalty
People of good character are loyal people. They have a "sticky" attitude when it comes to others. Anyone who knows human nature knows that people fail. It's only a matter of time, no matter how talented someone is. A person of good character sticks with his friends, even during downtime. Everyone can be friends with each other when times are good. People of good character stay with their friends when they need it most. Here's how that translates to making you a good leader:People want to follow a leader who will stretch them beyond their current position, but also allow them to try — and fail. When we are loyal to our subscribers, they will be loyal to us and will do whatever they can to succeed on our behalf and on behalf of the organization. Few things strengthen the leader-follower bond more than when a leader shows loyalty to a needy follower.
4. Self-sacrifice
Lee Iacocca became a legend when he said he would bring Chrysler back from the brink of bankruptcy and take only a dollar a year in salary. He was a classic example of a leader sacrificing for the followers. It also showed his understanding and empathy for the average line worker. As a result, Chrysler workers rewarded him with an incredible following as they built Chrysler into one of the world's leading auto companies.
What is the self-sacrifice that breeds followers? Subscribers don't shy away from hard work. They don't even mind a leader making more money or profiting from their work. What bothers subscribers, however, is when the leader uses them for personal gain. People of good character don't use other people, period. So when a leader makes sacrifices of personal gain, they are telling followers that they are willing to go with them – and followers almost universally reward this. A person of good character demonstrates that he can give up personal gain for the good of the whole.
5. Liability
Reputable people don't care about liability. In fact, they welcome it. It is about allowing others to have a say in your life, to speak directly to you about your life and your conduct. The blunt truth is that we have blind spots and other people need to be close to us in order for us to move forward on the path to success. The need for responsibility does not prove lack of character. On the contrary, it proves the presence of character. G.K. Chesterton said, “Original Sin is the only philosophy empirically validated by 3,500 years of human history.” The person of good character knows this and invites others to talk about their lives.
Followers tire of leaders who will have nothing to do with accountability. They don't care about leaders who make mistakes, but they do care about leaders who don't take responsibility for their mistakes by being responsible. When we allow ourselves to be held accountable, our followers know that we really care about keeping our own house in order and will therefore do a good job leading the rest of the organization.
6. Self-Control
The ability to make decisions – good decisions – about what we will and will not do with our actions is central to who we become as far as our character is concerned. There will be many options to participate in things that are not moral. Everyone has temptations, but a person of good character knows how to exercise self-control – literal control over their choices. When people don't exercise self-control, they sabotage their ability to lead. People lose their respect for them and will follow less, if at all. Self-control is the ability to choose to do the things we should do and refrain from doing the things we shouldn't. When we demonstrate self-control, we again build the confidence of our followers. They respect us and want to follow us.
Build character
We are all born with clean slates. As we grow, many influences shape our character:our parents, teachers, friends, and choices all shape that inner character. The good news is that no matter where you are right now, you can decide that your character will grow stronger. You can choose to be with those people who will challenge you to become better. You can choose to put positive materials into your mind and heart. You can begin to make choices that reflect a change in lifestyle and therefore character. No one is "stuck." You can change, if you want!
Skill Development
As we talked about at the very beginning, leadership is the challenge of being something more than average. This requires developing our skills. Skills development is important on its own, if for no other reason than the fact that as human beings we were designed to grow.
Skills development is important because:
1. It brings us fulfillment.
As we develop our skills, we develop a deep sense of personal satisfaction knowing that we have learned something new, and not only have we learned it , but we also applied it successfully.
2. It will advance our careers.
As many modern people would like to believe that there shouldn't be competition, there always will be. And, believe it or not, the winner is usually the person who honed their skills. Whether on the field or in the boardroom, the winner is usually the person with the highest skill level.
3. It will help you help others.
That's life, right? One of the things a skilled leader can do is help people see themselves better than they are. And when you develop skills, you can help others, and it helps you in the long run.
6 Skills Great Leaders Must Master
Finally, let's review the six skills that all great leaders leaders must master:
1. The ability to inspire
A leader must be able to inspire others. Yes, we must strike the spirit with our message, but we must also stir the heart and its passions. The leader who is only rational will have bored followers who are uninspired to go anywhere. The leader who is only emotional will have excited followers who don't know where to go! You need both. Develop your ability to inspire your followers and make them happy to be with you and the organization. Help them see the big picture that shows they are making a difference.
2. Good Communication
Great leaders are those who can take the vision they have and communicate it in a way that their followers can easily understand, internalize and own. Many leaders have great vision but fail to lead their organizations everywhere. A vision that is only kept in your mind is not a vision, but a dream. The vision communicated in a clear, memorable and passionate way, so that people can grasp and follow it, is what will take your group, whether large or small, to the next level and beyond.
