Ronald Porter, 51, Lyft rider since 2016
I joined Lyft because…
I was told it was a good company and wanted to try it out for myself. I was a truck driver. I did it for 10 years, but it took me away from home for too long. I like Lyft because there is more freedom. You are actually working for yourself. You work the hours you want to work and stop when you want.
When I'm not driving, I...
Started a non-profit organization [Port Productions; PortProductionBDS.com] where I will be working with children aged 5-17. There are many children who do not have structured activities during the summer. We will be teaching music, theater arts, audio engineering, photography and other performing arts. We're trying to get them interested in something that maybe they could go a little further. Every individual on this earth is endowed with at least one gift. If we can help identify this gift, we can build better people. I want to help our future and the future is our children.
You have to push yourself because...
You have to be motivated. You can't expect to come out here whenever you feel like it and expect the money to be there for you. You have to learn the system and the region.
I like driving for Lyft because…
I meet a lot of different people. I learn every day. I learn something new every time I travel. A lot of people I've met have helped me with some of the ideas I'm working on. Some of the instructors who will be teaching in my program have met Lyft drivers. It's like another way to network.
