Read More But what if you're not at a desk? What is the best posture for those of you who prefer to work on the couch or in bed?
According to a 2010 study, if you use a laptop regularly, the best position is to lie down with your knees up and the laptop resting on your thighs.
Any other position you can think of will create tension somewhere in your body, as shown in the image below. The image above to the right demonstrates what the study says is the ideal posture.
If you find it difficult to concentrate when lying down, an alternative would be to sit up and place a pillow directly behind your lower back.
"When you focus your eyes on your device, your body will follow, often in an unhealthy position," said Mark Goetz, a furniture designer who designed an ergonomic sofa. He recommends keeping your devices at eye level so you don't bend over or strain your neck and spine.
If you have to sit on a couch while using a laptop, try bringing your computer closer to your eye level.
