A 2016 global survey by design platform 99designs asked entrepreneurs what inspired them to start and build a business. A survey of over 1,700 entrepreneurs from the US, UK, Europe and Australia found that becoming a business owner today is about creating a life that works for you. The survey revealed that the decision to start a business is dominated by a desire for personal fulfillment, freedom and passion rather than climbing the corporate ladder.
Today's entrepreneurs are ingenious. They like to educate themselves online and invest in their skills in order to further develop themselves and grow their business. Owning a business takes courage. As a result, 28% of respondents said gaining confidence was the skill they invest in the most.
Today's entrepreneurs are not shy about taking matters into their own hands. They are “do-it-yourself entrepreneurs” and built their business from the ground up. Even though starting a business does not necessarily mean getting rich very quickly, more than 87% would have started a business again. But the second time around, they would avoid some mistakes made when they started out as entrepreneurs. 19% consider “not asking for help” to be their biggest mistake.
