While tidying up is increasingly seen as a real factor influencing our morale and well-being, researchers from the University of Minnesota (USA) have found that sometimes working in a mess can be much more productive. The study thus confirms the thesis already put forward by previous surveys. So, if your office is a merry mess on which countless files are piled up, papers do you want some, empty coffee cups and your green plant does not look good, do not panic! You might actually be smarter and more creative than average.
To reach this astonishing conclusion, the scientists conducted an experiment on two groups of individuals. While some participants worked in a clean and tidy environment, the others found themselves in a completely messy room. As a result, the volunteers in the messy room managed to come up with the same number of ideas as their counterparts, who were considered more interesting and more creative. The study also shows that people with a messy desk are more likely to take risks and dare to break the rules than others. And when we refer to intellectuals such as Albert Einsten, Thomas Edison and even Steve Jobs, they all have messy workspaces! Rather reassuring, isn't it?
