The standalone version of Microsoft Office 2019 will be exclusive to Windows 10. While Office 2019 could run on Windows 7 and 8.1, Microsoft does not plan to support it on these versions of its operating system. Also, Microsoft Office 2019 could be the latest version of Office available outside of an Office 365 subscription.
A lot is happening with Microsoft Office this year. Let's tackle the changes one question at a time.
We don't have a release date for Microsoft Office 2019 yet. Historically, new versions of Office were released anywhere from half a year earlier (Office 2000 in June 1999) to the last quarter of the year in which the name was given (Office 2003 in October 2003). Meanwhile, Microsoft Office follows a more rigid development schedule, and Microsoft announced that Office 2019 will be released in the second half of 2018. Microsoft also said it would ship the first patches of Office 2019 in mid-2018.
Since Microsoft is releasing versions of Office in stages, a mid-year beta would require an earlier trial version. Computerworld speculates that the first version of Microsoft Office 2019 could be available as early as March 13, 2018, when the next scheduled release of Office 365 ProPlus is released.
Microsoft has not yet released full information on new features. However, in the previous blog post from September 2017, Jared Spataro, general manager of Microsoft Office, mentioned a few:
Spataro also listed the server's improvements in terms of ease of use and voice. Could this mean that Cortana will integrate better with Microsoft Office 2019? We can expect more information when the first previews of Microsoft Office 2019 appear in mid-2018.
If you're currently a Microsoft Office 365 subscriber, you won't have to pay extra for an Office upgrade. Your monthly or annual subscription fees should remain stable, although we can't promise that Microsoft won't adjust the price.
Unfortunately, we do not yet have pricing details for the standalone desktop version of Microsoft Office 2019. However, we expect Microsoft to offer similar tiers to Office 2016. Microsoft currently lists Office Home &Student 2016 pricing at $149.99 (see screenshot). screen above). Open box versions and Amazon deals may be available for less.

You'll be able to buy Microsoft Office 2019 in a box, directly from Microsoft, from online retailers like Amazon, or possibly from a trusted local office provider like Staples or Best Buy.
Keep in mind that you'll need Windows 10 to run a compatible version of Microsoft Office 2019. That said, Microsoft hasn't released system requirements for Microsoft Office 2019 yet, and it can also run on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. You may not receive any updates on unsupported versions of Windows.
No, you can keep using the desktop version of Microsoft Office forever.
Please note, however, that Microsoft has limited your license rights. Previously, Enterprise customers could connect to Microsoft cloud-based services for the entire Microsoft Office support lifecycle, which used to be 10 years. With the end of general support for Office 2016, Microsoft will enforce its new policy, which limits access to its cloud services to the first half of the support lifecycle.
In other words, on October 13, 2020, you will lose the ability to connect to Microsoft Exchange to host email, SharePoint for online document management and collaboration, and OneDrive for Business for online storage. To maintain access to these features, you must upgrade to Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus in October 2020.
General support for Microsoft Office 2019 will be five years. However, extended support has been reduced from five to just two years and is expected to expire on October 14, 2025.
Please note that extended support for Microsoft Office 2016 ends on the same day. This is intentional, as Caitlin Fitzgerald explains:
This caused Computerworld to predict that there will not be another standalone or perpetual desktop version of Office after Microsoft Office 2019. In the future, an Office 365 subscription might be the only way to access Microsoft Office. But who knows if we'll still have desktop computers by then.
It depends.
If you really need Office, you might want to get one or the other. If you have a Microsoft Office 2016 license, you must wait until its support ends.
