First, create the document, spreadsheet, or presentation you want to serve as a template. What you create here will be the file you start with in the future, so be sure to put in all the necessary information and formatting before saving.
Once that's done, you'll want to save the file with File>Save As , but the trick is to save it as a template file, not a normal one . For Word, this is a .dotx (Word Template) file extension instead of a normal .docx (Word File) file. Look for this option in the Save as type: box below the filename field when saving your file.
Save as template means that when you double-click the file, it opens in Word/Excel/PowerPoint as usual, but opens as Document 1 instead of the root file. So when you choose Save for the first time, it asks you to save it with a new name.
