For almost 94 percent of the Dutch, the coffee moment at work is in the morning and full of small 'coffee rituals'. For example, 79 percent say they have regular uses for their daily cup of coffee at the office. These rituals range from drinking the same number of cups of coffee every day and doing this at set times, to drinking the same cup every day. This is evident from De Koffiemonitor, the annual survey into coffee trends at work commissioned by Nestlé Professional.
In a regular working week, no less than 47 percent of employees have already had a cup of coffee before 9 a.m. and more than half visit the coffee machine before they have even settled in their workplace (54.1%). There are two popular times for coffee in the office, which are between 8:00 AM and 8:30 AM and between 10:00 AM and 10:30 AM. Both moments are mentioned as their favorite coffee moment by 16.3 percent of the respondents. In addition to the fact that two-thirds indicate that they have the most physical need for coffee in the morning, 71.3 percent also find it a good habit to drink coffee in the morning. For 59 percent, coffee in the morning simply tastes best.
The time at the coffee machine is mainly spent catching up with colleagues about work-related matters (33.3%) and non-work-related topics (31.3%), but also with private matters such as checking messages on social media and WhatsApp ( 6.5%). Employees under the age of 30 do this relatively more often (11.4%). Some employees (3.4%) even find the coffee corner a good place to flirt with colleagues.
Nearly three in ten coffee drinkers drink the same coffee variety throughout the day. Just under thirty percent drink coffee at fixed times every day. Almost twenty percent of Dutch employees also drink a fixed number of cups of coffee. Nearly six in ten indicate that they prefer to drink their coffee from glass or porcelain dishes rather than from a paper or plastic cup.
