5 ways to know if you're ready for a new job

If you've reached a plateau in your current job or career, now could be an excellent time for a re-evaluation. Thinking of a career switch? Here are five indicators of why people change careers:

1. The passion is over
You are afraid to get up in the morning for work. Or maybe your job leaves you unfulfilled, and you know there's something better out there.

2. You are not making progress
You have worked hard for years, but you are not recognized or promoted.

3. You are daydreaming at work
You find your mind wandering, wondering what else is out there.

4. The industry you are in is retreating
You are in a career that is not growing, and you need to change for economic reasons.

5. Your talents are underused
You are more skilled than your current position allows.

Staying in a dull or disappointing career can cause a lot of personal unhappiness. However, the grass isn't always greener, as the saying goes. So explore before you jump:

A new position in the same industry
If the company is big enough, there might be a good match for you in another department.

A career in an adjacent industry
If your career sector is experiencing limited job growth, research a new career related to it.

However, when it's time to explore a new career, here are a few things to consider.

Challenges
A challenge for women is the battle between what you really want to do (if known), your "dream job" and the reality of financial/family obligations. Before making any sudden moves, research potential new career paths and their job growth projections. Changing careers is intimidating, so verify that you can grow in your new career field before moving on!

Changing careers can be a daunting undertaking. However, success can be yours, with due diligence, careful research, and a strategic plan. There is no time like the present!
